Kaliyattam UAE is a cultural committee formed to celebrate and preserve the rich traditions of Theyyam and the heritage of Kolathnadu. Rooted in the vibrant folklore of Northern Kerala, we bring the essence of these age-old rituals and stories to the UAE, connecting the community to its cultural roots.

Our mission is to keep these traditions alive by organizing Theyyam performances, cultural events, and interactive sessions. Through these efforts, we aim to create a platform for cultural appreciation and unity, ensuring that the stories of our past inspire and resonate with future generations.

Kaliyattam Events

Makkavum Makkalum” is a term associated with the Theyyam ritual, specifically referring to the goddess Makkam and her children. It’s a name used for the Makkam Theyyam, a ritualistic dance performed in Kerala, India. The term translates to “Makkam and her children” and alludes to the tragic story of Makkam and her two children who were killed by her brothers.

Vishnumoorthi Theyyam is the most popular Vaishnava Theyyam. This theyyam is known for its loud and peculiar drum beats which can be heard up to 2 kms surrounding the place of origin. The most fascinating ritual in the Vishnumoorthi Theyyam is the Agnipravesham. The Vishnumoorthi Ottakolam enters the pyre many times during the performance. Vishnumoorthy Theyyam enacts the Narasimha Avatar of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu took the form of Narasimha to kill Hiranyakashipu, the demon king and father of Prahlada.

Sasthappan Theyyam, also known as Kuttichathan Theyyam, is a vibrant ritualistic performance in North Kerala, India, with a rich mythology. The story revolves around Kuttichathan, a mischievous and powerful entity born from Shiva and Parvati, who is adopted by a childless Namboodiri family. Kuttichathan’s rebellious and non-Brahminical actions lead to conflict, resulting in his death and subsequent rebirth as a deity worshipped through Theyyam.
